The Benefits Fish Oil Can Have On Your Skin

Updated: May 6, 2020

Taking fish oil everyday can reduce signs of photo-ageing and hyper-pigmentation caused by sun exposure. Fatty acids found in fish oil have shown benefits in skin-related diseases includes therapies for photo-ageing, cancer, dermatitis, wound healing, and melanogenesis. Some fatty acids are under clinical trial for preventive or therapeutic use. While others have been approved for clinical use.

FISH OIL BENEFITS FOR PHOTO-AGEING

Skin ageing can be divided into chronological ageing and photo-ageing. Photo-ageing is activated by skin damage as a result of repeated ultraviolet (UV) exposure from sunlight. UV exposure causes both acute and chronic adverse effects on the skin. These include sunburn, photosensitivity and inflammation. In addition to sunscreens, UV-induced skin damage needs photo-protective agents. Fatty acids derived from fish oil have been considered to provide the skin with photo-protection benefits.

FISH OIL BENEFITS FOR HYPER-PIGMENTATION

The process of generating and distributing melanin is called Melanogenesis. Hyper-pigmentation in the skin is stimulated by UV exposure. Melanin is responsible for skin colour and plays a large role in protection of the skin against UV damage. Tyrosinase is a rate-limiting enzyme. The properties of fish oil have been reported to reveal skin-whitening capability through the mechanism of tyrosinase inhibition.
